Low Sodium Tacos

[ Video Transcipt ]

Hi, welcome to Kelly the Nurse. Today we're gonna do a very brief video on one of my favorite foods, which is tacos. Tacos can be one of the lowest sodium foods that there are out there and one of the most delicious for sure.

Ground beef, if you do not use any taco seasoning mix, you just cook your ground beef. You put some pepper in it, you put some garlic in it, you slice up or dice up or however you wanna do it, any kind of fresh chilies that you ever wanna do. You just can't open a seasoning or open a thing that says taco seasoning because taco seasoning is actually mostly sodium. It's gonna put something healthy and delicious like tacos far above what you can have. If you want spicy tacos mrs. Dash has a taco seasoning mix It's right over here on my table and there are fresh ways to season your tacos like we just talked about.

What I want to talk to you about is what you use to make your tacos, because here is a shock, Corn tortillas is how you should make all of your tacos from now on. Corn tortillas have 5 milligrams of sodium in the traditional corn tortilla. Now some have 15 milligrams, some have, these have 5 milligrams of sodium, but either way a corn tortilla wrapped around well -seasoned ground beef or chicken topped with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese (sprinkle sprinkle see the other video we did about sprinkling high -sodium foods like cheese), use a sprinkle but enjoy it some sour cream which is pretty low in sodium and then tomatoes and lettuce and anything like that that you want in your tacos if that taco is wrapped around, I think I might have had it upside down, no I didn't. If it's wrapped around a corn tortilla you're going to spend about 5 to 15 milligrams of sodium on your tortilla.

If you want a flour tortilla, and do note that these are slightly larger, but unfortunately flour tortillas are very very very high in sodium or can be in fact they all are this flour tortilla that is a little bit bigger than my corn tortillas here this tortilla here is 330 milligrams of sodium you can get a smaller flour tortilla they're gonna be still be about 275 to 300 milligrams of sodium so you decide if you want your tacos to be wrapped in a corn tortilla with a sprinkling of cheese or wrapped in a flour tortilla and really no cheese no sour cream nothing that's going to add sodium you can make that choice. I just want to let you be aware that corn is almost zero and flour tortillas are quite a bit of sodium.

Thank you for watching.
