When Good Foods Go Bad

[ Video Transcipt ]

Welcome to Kelly the nurse. This video is called when good foods go bad and we're going to talk about what happens when you take good non -sodium foods like a bag of beans and you put them in a can what happens to those beans. So when you take zero sodium dry beans that are kind of a pain to cook but you put them in a you're going to add 380 milligrams per half cup serving, so 0 to 380 during the canning process.

When you take something like pasta, any kind of pasta, they're all zero by the way, in a box like this whether it's long pasta like this or elbow pasta or any kind of macaroni, pasta in a box like this is going to be zero milligrams of sodium. When you take this pasta and you put it in rice -a -roni, you're going to add 620 milligrams per serving. Zero to 600. When you put it in mac and cheese with flavorings and things like that, you're going to go much much higher than this. This is 370 milligrams.

If you take a delicious pork roast and this guy just got out of the freezer and he's 70 milligrams at about four ounce serving and you mix them up with deliciousness called Jamaican jerk style pork you're going to add about 300 milligrams of sodium when you do that.

Likewise and the worst offenders by the way are taking delicious rice zero sodium in the pure rice form. Even minute rice by the way has zero sodium. And then you're going to put it in these mixes like so and you're going to add for one serving 650 milligrams. This is about 550. You can see on the back that I've labeled these with a lot of salt shakers. Each salt shaker on my labels is 100 milligrams. So you're going to take a zero sodium rice, which is perfect and delicious with a little butter on it, no soy sauce, and you're gonna put them in a box with admittedly delicious seasonings, but then you're gonna add so much sodium that a healthy good food goes bad for you following your low -sodium diet.

Same tragedy happens when you take delicious potatoes and you stick them in a bag like this, not only does the cost go from 79 cents a pound to whatever this costs, which is a lot, and it's not very much food, but you're going to add a lot of sodium per serving. Not per bag, per serving is 580 milligrams.

So when you're shopping, do your budget and your heart a favor. And for diabetics, this is also the case for you folks. And buy foods in the natural state as much as you can. Buy pasta like this and season it and flavor it with a good low -sodium sauce. And we do have an option for that in another video. Buy these beans and soak them and cook them with no salt. Maybe put some fresh herbs in there. Just know that when you take good foods like pasta or beans or rice, brown rice, white rice or potatoes and you put them in stuff they're gonna add sodium.

The can of tomatoes is here too because the same goes for fresh produce. You can buy green beans frozen or fresh and they have no sodium. You stick them in a can like these tomatoes here and you're gonna add not a little bit but a lot. This has 210 and half a cup and canned green beans and corn have have more than that.

So the next time you buy these great foods to build your meals, rice, potatoes, pasta and beans, try to get them in the cheapest and in the most healthy natural state.

Thank you for watching Kelly the Nurse.
