Making the Most of a Doctor's Appointment
Once upon a time, we could rely on our family doctor seeing us whenever we got sick, calling us by name.
Today we have the best health care known to man. Like so many other things, the best things come at a higher price. Increased co-pays, out of pocket expenses and decreased time spent with the physician, possibly one you haven't seen before. On average, doctors have just 15 minutes to spend with each patient. I will help you make the most of your 'fifteen minutes of fame'.
Be prepared! Bring a list of the medications you are currently taking no matter who prescribed them. Make sure the list of updated, the meds are spelled correctly and the dose is accurate. Keep a written record of hospitalizations and new diagnoses with dates.
Write down the reason you are seeing the doctor and your symptoms. The doctor can read this list faster than if you explain to him. Doctors and nurses quickly pick out the pertinent information and then ask you what they need to know to make a diagnosis or assess a complaint. Lots of time is wasted reviewing non-relevant information. Writing information down in advance helps the patient too. How many times have you forgotten to ask the doctor something until after the appointment?
Take someone with you if possible or have the doctor write down any information or words you don't understand. Repeat back what the doctor tells you to make sure you have the information correct.
Bring a pen and paper and take notes!
